The McLaren P1 GT

If you know a thing or two about historic cars, you’ll realise how special this one is.

Have you ever wished that you could go back to the times when the legends like the McLaren F1 and F1 GTR were shown to the world? Well, this more or less like one of those times. That’s because the McLaren P1 GT built by Lanzante is directly inspired by the McLaren F1 GT and it was recently shown to the world at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It doesn’t get anymore British than that does it? Based off the P1 GTR and inspired by the F1 GT, you can only imagine how special this beast is to the brand and it’s enthusiasts.

The P1 GT has an extended rear-end, or as McLaren would call it, an LT. In addition to the extended rear-end is reworked rear carbon diffuser featuring quad pipes and a massive fixed rear wing. Moving over to the side of the car Lanzante has added an aerodynamic side skirt and a carbon blade before the rear wheels. If that doesn’t scream ‘highly aerodynamic’ for you, then this certainly will, the front end sports some more carbon bits, one of them being a larger front splitter than the one on the P1 GTR. To add on to it, the mirrors are now mounted in the middle of the A-pillars along with vented fenders. And you thought the regular P1 was highly aerodynamic?  The P1 GT is finished in XP green, which is the same shade seen on the McLaren F1 GT long tail. The colour and the long tail aren’t the only inspirations taken from the F1 GT. The vented fenders and alloy rims are also inspired from the F1 GT to remind us of the legend the P1 GT represents.

While most motorsport inspired cockpits look like they have nothing but carbon fiber all  over the interior, the P1 GT actually does an amazing job at making the driver feel like the car doesn’t simply belong only at the track. The interior is done in what looks like XP green leather with beige accents, which comes off as a very nice touch indeed to a car of such calibre. Even the F1 style steering wheel, has some XP green leather around it with the doors sporting huge bits of exposed carbon. Down the middle you’ll see the typical McLaren centre console also finished in carbon fiber with not-so-comfortable looking bucket seats on either side.

Lanzante, the company so famously known for building special vehicles such as the P1 LM and also owning a motorsport team, hasn’t revealed any numbers yet. While that might be unfortunate, even in the worst case scenario, if the P1 GT houses the same performance figures from the P1 GTR without any changes being made to it, it is still expected to hold at least 986 horses which should be more than enough. However, it is highly doubtful that Lanzante hasn’t made any changes to the numbers considering all the carbon bits around the car that will possibly give it a higer downforce than the P1 GTR. Currently only one P1 GTR exists, but another one is also expected to be built since the McLaren F1 GT also had 2 examples. The performance details are said to be announced sometime during the GFOS by the person who commissioned the car.
