Mission E becomes Porsche Taycan.

Better watch your back Tesla because Porsche is ‘Taycan’ over!

July 4 ,2018

Porsche, the automaker that needs no introduction, is cooking up a car that will destroy any negative assumptions you might have of the electric world. As you all might already know, Porsche began development of the Mission-E back in 2015, and today it is known as the Porsche Taycan. Before we get into it, what is the Mission-E all about? It is a “Tribute to Tomorrow” and the future sportscar. There is no better automaker out there that can convince the enthusiasts who love the roaring sound of a V aligned supercar, that indeed, there is still hope for us in the electric world.

Why you say? Think about this.

The automaker that cooked up a track-attacking machine which destroyed the HuracanPerformante’sNurburgring lap time, is the same automaker, telling it’s enthusiast that they will create an all-electric supercar, and that we’re going to love it. “In the future our sports cars will tackle these routes too (digitisation and urbanisation) – in pole position – bringing new technologies from the race track to the road.” When you hear Porsche say that they will tackle the problems of the combustion engine “in pole position” by “bringing new technologies from the racetrack to the road” you know they mean business.

The goal for Porsche is to build a car that is undoubtedly a Porsche. A Porsche with the same soul that is carried in the high-end 911 models, only this time, electrified. The design of the car itself speaks heights about it’s abilities. Since there is no engine or air intakes required, Porsche was able to design a very clean-looking lowfront end, resembling the older legendary Porsche models from the 1960s. Move toward the side and you’ll find shapes that are taken from the Porsche 919 LeMansracecar and the Porsche 918, continuing toward the rear-end. Low, sleek looks and undoubtable Porsche DNA embedded into the Taycan shows what it really is all about. One doesn’t simply expect to build a futuristic looking car with 70 years of motorsport heritage and DNA combined into one single body, unless of course you’re Porsche. In order to really give a sports car feel, Porsche designed frameless suicide doors without any B-pillars to make it easier than ever to get in and out of a sportscar, and to also make it feel futuristic. For those who do not know, the B pillar is the pillar that separates the front doors from the rear ones.

The interior is whole different world. “The Mission-E will carry into a new Era of all the things that the 911 has been famous for” and as we all know, one of the best features of the 911 was it’s driving, and Porsche promises to deliver the same driving experience as the 911 did. The interior is simple, yet highly futuristic. The dashboard is only one piece of curved glass displaying all driver information, another touchscreen panel runs down the centre console,  and a the third screen sneaks in from the driver’s side all the way toward the passenger side to be one of the best looking infotainment systems. The steering wheel sports 3 spokes finished in high gloss black with the wheel covered in black leather and the Porsche logo sitting proud in middle. There hasn’t been any mention of buttons and that’s because there are none. The Taycan will operate purely on hand gestures while tracking the driver’s eye to point out exactly what the driver wants to command through a holographic display. The seats are naturally shaped bucket seats with an extremely sporty, yet comfortable design. The mirrors are virtually placed on either side of the steering wheel, which also adds to a cleaner look on the exterior.

I think its safe to say that Porsche the only brand that could make you love the electric car after making you love the petrol engine with the Carrera GT and the 911 GT3.? What’s really interesting is that although the Mission-E is set to enter production in 2020, Tesla now has a proper hard-core competitor. Especially given the recent news that Porsche has bought 10% of the record-breaking electric supercar company, Rimac. On the other hand Tesla has claims that they’re roadster can do 0-60 in a staggering 1.9 seconds. It’ll be interesting to see what further developments Porsche will make to it’s Mission-E division.
