The Terradyne Armored Vehicles Gurkha is an armored military and law enforcement vehicle built by Ontario-based Terradyne Armoured Vehicles Inc.
This 4×4 light armored patrol vehicle is currently produced in three tactical configurations (LAPV/MPV/RPV), each of which employs the Ford F550 chassis. They both employ Ford's in-house built 6.7L Power Stroke V8 diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The name is a homage to the Gurkhas, Nepali units who served in the Imperial British Army. Terradyne Armored Vehicles understands that concern, so they started producing the Gurkha to make sure that you’re ready for battle as you go pick up your groceries.
LAPV (Light Armoured Patrol Vehicle):
Used by Border patrol/law enforcement/government agencies/private security/tactical medic vehicle.
MPV (Multi-purpose Patrol Vehicle):
Purpose built for law enforcement and related government agencies only. SWAT/SRT/ETF/ERT/rescue vehicle.
RPV (Rapid Patrol Vehicle):
Used for critical infrastructure protection/law enforcement/government agencies/military/border patrol.
RPV Civilian Edition (civilian):
Used as the companies PR vehicle/daily driver/rolling panic room/executive protection/offroad vehicle/hobby vehicle.
The Gurkhas retain the six-speed automatic transmission without any tweaking or tinketing to it. These things are designed for potential end-of-the-world situations, so you don’t want to be shifting gears when the apocalypse rolls in. Hence these machines come with a manual gearbox and not an automatic one.
These brutal beasts top out at about 130 kmph, due to their weight as they are not exactly designed for speed. The Terradyne site outlines the specs of the various cars, so the Gurkha can run anywhere up to 19,500 lbs, depending on the options you outfit it with. It’s pretty intense. It’s the most well-outfitted non-military vehicle you can buy as a regular Joe. If you’re preparing for doomsday, though, you’re gonna be down about $350k.
The Gurkha appeared in the 2011 film Fast Five and as the getaway car in the Monte Carlo chase of the 2012 animation film Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. The vehicle was also used in the second season of Arrow, a television show based on the DC comics character Green Arrow. Rockstar Games used some elements and design of the SUV in Grand Theft Auto Online for an armoured vehicle named the HVY Insurgent and a similar vehicle, the HVY Insurgent Pick-Up. It is also featured in racing games Forza Horizon 2 and Forza Motorsport 6 as a part of Fast & Furious Car Pack DLC. It was also featured in Forza Horizon 3 as a Forzathon reward.
It might be worth keeping in mind that you can find one of these being manufactured in Ontario, so you’ll know where to head when the world starts going downhill.
