Coming from the recent Geneva Watch Days’21, Breitling launched the most exquisite car centric watch collection. We got to witness one of the Breitling’s Top time capsule collection last week. As we think there’s always a way to get back the icons of yore to our modern times as a design celebration or mantra in terms of Mr. Georges Kern, the CEO of Breitling, their latest release ‘Top time classic cars capsule collection’ which as the name implies, is an homage to American automotive icons or muscle cars. Each watch takes the theme of a specific '60s-era classic car: The early '60s Shelby Cobra, the second-generation Corvette (1963 to 1967), and the first-generation Ford Mustang (1964 to 1969). 

Got our hands on the Breitling’s Top time Ford Mustang version, having it up close, the shade of green was unmatched to any other greens from the watches out there. The unconventional chronograph looked perfect with a 42mm rich green dial cases housing an ETA 2892-A2-based automatic movements matched to a brown racing-themed calfskin leather strap featuring orange and yellow on its green dial and the Ford mustang logo both on the dial and the caseback.

What better way to link the watch shade to a Race Red Ford Mustang GT from Mr.Harman’s garage and him being a watch collector himself. The absolute match can be seen from the album from the day’s shoot alongside the car being the design inspiration, an ideal for race-focused sportsters, being a true icon for the rock stars and actors back in that day and that still amazes the whole generation.

Talking about the other two modern-retro interpretations brought to life, the Chevrolet corvette is based on the design of the striking Corvette C2 from the mid-1960s, often referred to as the “Sting Ray”. It features a bold red dial, three contrasting black chronograph counters and a matching tachymeter scale. Apart from the usual blue and green dials, the Red looks absolutely stunning to its shade with the black contrast, unusual and a rather difficult shade to acquire on a watch. Both the Watches from the collection : the Ford mustang and the Chevrolet Corvette measure to a 42mm case size with a chronometer-certified movement inside – the Breitling Caliber 25, a self-winding 1/8th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of about 42 hours.

The third one being a Shelby cobra inspiration, this reference stands out a little more, not only for it’s blue dial honouring the paintjob of it’s namesake but also the stainless steel case of this model that comes in a little smaller at 40mm in diameter, with its own COSC-certified movement – the Breitling Caliber 41, a self-winding 1/4th of a second chronograph movement with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours.

AA thoughts;

Distinctive to their individual bold colours and sizes, they function differently due to the different movements used, giving you the vintage feels through a wrist watch (more so you being a vintage watch collector). The modern-retro interpretations are a mid-aged icons celebration for the more youthful and free spirited beings. 

The simpler dial performance and unique shades, bring out a new definition of classic car celebration to our modern times, remembering the class apart icons through these ‘Top Time classic capsule collection’ by Breitling.

In the end, we had an absolute blast with Mr.Harman’s Ford Mustang GT growling in all its V8 glory while he steered his way with the Breitling’s top time mustang model, making it an utter match to its inspiration.
