A journey full of GTS moments.

The Porsche 718 GTS models on a Sicily road trip.

April 10 ,2018

From Etna over the winding mountain roads of the Targa Florio, before heading down to the unspoilt South: driving the new 718 GTS models, four Porsche fans have discovered a unique route for us in Sicily.

Even today, the mountain roads of Sicily are not for the faint of heart. Anyone who wants to slice the curves and shave seconds here needs an iron reserve of bravado along with an uncompromisingly aggressive driving machine. So what better car could there be to explore the curves of the Targa Florio than one of Porsche 718 GTS's models? The classic Porsche 718 won the Targa Florio a total of three times and with four cylinders instead of the previous six, the new Porsche 718 Cayman calls to mind its historic predecessor, which took a puristic and agile approach to challenging the sheer size of its rivals’ engines, not unlike David taking on Goliath.

The first light of the day sets the mood for the upcoming journey: A road trip through Sicily, an Italian island at the heart of the Mediterranean, with the new 718 GTS models. 4 people and 5 days to explore this beautiful island in southern Italy. To find the most picturesque views of the sea and the best places to enjoy “la dolce vita” between Europe’s highest active volcano called as Mount Etna located in the east and the small medieval town of Erice in the west. But most importantly to find the most thrilling roads to drive two mid-engine sports cars that simply can't wait to feel the tarmac beneath them.

The second day starts from mount Etna - Cefalù. The weather seems to be outright rainy and overcast, so the bags were packed to hit the road in the northern direction. A memorable moment, crossing a gorgeous mountain pass unexpectedly occupied by free-ranged goats and sheep to head to the coastal side for the night with the prospect of better weather conditions.

The third day starts in Cefalù - Erice. Today, the team splits after having breakfast. While Dustin and Luke head toward the area of the Targa Florio, Lina and Tobi begin their exploration of Cefalù. The appointed place for regrouping: the medieval village of Erice. The bags are packed, plans are made. Time to say goodbye and take off on another exciting day.

Day four is all about driving. Right into the heart of Sicily, Erice – Eremo della Giubiliana. Crossing the rough mountainous country to head down south in direction of Ragusa to stay there for the final two nights.

After a long day of driving yesterday, crowned by a spontaneous drag race on the hotels’ airstrip, it’s time to visit some of the cities around and discover the rural south on day five. From the hotel, it goes off for a little round to Ragusa, Modica and Scicli. Rising on two sides of a narrow valley, Modica welcomes visitors with another church called San Giorgio. Its stairs zigzag up across the upper town’s hairpin turns, ending in a terrace in front of the church. It’s kind of fun to have a look at these streets from the other side of the valley, before driving them.

For travel blogger Tobi from Germany and filmmaker Luke from the UK this passion has turned into their actual profession. These skills, along with German Porsche fan Lina's delight for travel documentation, match perfectly with the intentions of the #GTSroadtrip. The final piece of the puzzle: Porsche fan and owner Dustin and his driving skills, which he gained during his road trips across the United States. It’s the wide-ranging interests of the GTS road trip team, their passion for cars, their love for travelling and for adventures that make the mixture so exciting. And their desire to discover the unexpected, to share experiences with others.
